It's footprint on this earth is about half a parking space. You can get hooked on not only their "greeness", but their "coolness". The green/coolness brings many people to want a Smart Car. The whole thing is tied up to a greater awareness of the enviornmental issues. If you are driving down the road in a huge SUV, you need to rethink what you are driving. If you are commuting 25 or 30 miles a day, you should think about a Smart Car. They get great gas milage, are easy to park, and are really fun to drive. Soon, you'll see alot of them on the highway. The Smart Car was designed by Swatch, a Swiss watch making company that specializes in making simple, inexpensive, high quality products. The vehicles are made by Mercedes. If you combine the S of Swatch and the M for Mercedes and ART, you have the SMART CAR. They have been making these little gems since 1988 and now sell in 36 countries. Officially, there are no dealerships in the USA at this time. Dealers must buy them abroad and bring them here for retrofit. The cost of this makes the purchase more than 20k. This will all change in 2008 when SmartUSA begins selling a slightly larger, more powerful version of the Smart Fortwo to the US market. Since it won't require retrofit, it will be less exspensive than the imported version, costing around 12K for the basic model to 17K for the convertible. Because of the car's size ,about 8 ft by 5 ft,(about 3 ft shorter than the Mini Cooper), some may worry that it will fold up like a tin can in a crash. It is equipped with air bags, titatnium shell design combined with German construction. This combination, provides a safe, economical alternative to the gas guzzling SUV. You are not going to be able to compete in the Grand Prix with the Smart's 3 cylinder 60 horsepower engine, but you will get 45-55 miles per gallon verses the Hummer's 10.
